Famous poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner S. Adbul Rahman passed away at his daughter’s house in Neelankarai on June 2 following an age-related illness. Rahman, 80, was a professor of Tamil at Islamiah College in Vaniyambadi for 29 years. He was also the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board. His poetry collections have won great critical acclaim, and his collection, “Alapanai” won him the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil in 2009.
He was one of the few poets who experimented with forms in Tamil poetry, including Haiku, Ghazal and Sufi elements into his poetry.
He is survived by his son and daughter.
